CG Emotron VSR Series Solar Pump Drives: Complete Guide to Features, Specifications & Programming

⚡ The VSR series from CG Emotron (CG Drives & Automation) is a dedicated solar pumping drive built for dependable, economical, user-friendly performance on borewell, irrigation and water-supply pumps. A soft-start feature prevents water hammering and extends system life, while a self-adaptive, high-accuracy built-in MPPT algorithm dynamically tracks the solar array’s maximum power point for the best possible water flow output. VSR drives accept both DC solar-array input and AC grid/generator input, so a pump keeps running even when the sun doesn’t cooperate. This guide covers everything from decoding the model number to wiring the drive and getting it running from the keypad.

📋 Understanding the VSR Model Number

Every VSR drive’s nameplate encodes its specification in the model number. Here’s how VSR48-003-20CEB breaks down:

Code PositionMeaning
VSRProduct series — VSR = Solar drive
48 / 23 / 11Input AC voltage level — 48 = 380–480V AC/540V DC · 23 = 220–240V AC/310V DC · 11 = 110–130V AC/160V DC
003 … 210Rated current code (A) — from 003 (2.5A) up to 210 (210A)
20Protection class — IP20
CControl panel — C = Standard panel
N / EEMC filter — N = No filter, E = EMC filter fitted
B / –Brake chopper — B = Brake chopper fitted, – = without

💡 A ‘-XS’ suffix on the model number denotes a drive with a 7-segment LCD display. The VSR line also includes an economical VSRE48 sub-series and a 310V-DC-input VSR23-XXX-D variant — both covered in the ratings table below.

🔌 Wiring the VSR Drive

Every VSR drive accepts a DC solar-array input at (−)/(+), with an optional AC grid/generator input for backup pumping on cloudy days or at night (except the DC-only VSR23-9p5-D). Layouts scale with power: 0.75–2.2kW models have a leaner I/O set (4 digital inputs, 2 analog inputs, 1 open-collector output), while 4–55kW VSR48 models add two more digital inputs, a second relay/open-collector output, and a third (bipolar) analog input.

Main power & motor circuit

✅ (−), (+) — DC input from the solar array
✅ L1, L2, L3 (VSR48) / L, N (VSR23, VSR11) — AC grid or backup-generator input, through an MCCB
✅ PB — external braking resistor connection
✅ U, V, W — output to the motor
✅ Earth (⎓) — motor and drive frame earthing

⚠️ Always wire and check connections with the drive fully powered down and the DC bus capacitors discharged. Route control wiring separately from the motor power cable to avoid electrical noise affecting the analog signals.

☀️ Recommended Solar Array Configuration

The number of panels needed per string depends on each panel’s open-circuit voltage (Voc). As a guide, for a 550W panel (Voc ≈ 50V):

VSR48-003 / 004 / 006 / 00913 × 1

💻 Programming & Commissioning the VSR Drive

💡 Typical first-run sequence: wire the solar array to (−)/(+) and, if fitted, the AC grid input to L1/L2/L3 (or L/N) → power up and confirm the keypad display → enter the parameter menu and set the motor nameplate data (rated voltage, current, frequency, poles) → configure the MPPT/DC-input parameters for your array’s Voc and wattage → set up any tank-level or dry-run protection inputs on the DI terminals → press RUN to confirm motor rotation direction, then let the MPPT algorithm take over as sunlight varies through the day.

Using EmoWizard software

EmoWizard helps with easy commissioning and troubleshooting of VSR series drives, offering user-friendly tools for viewing, manipulating and exchanging data with the drive. Statistics data can be plotted using the built-in oscilloscope, and the drive can be started/stopped directly from the software’s control panel.

🌍 Typical Applications

✅ Agriculture irrigation
✅ Industrial water supply
✅ Domestic water
✅ Animal husbandry
✅ Desert control
✅ Aquaculture

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can a VSR drive run a pump when there’s no sunlight?

✅ Yes — every VSR model except the DC-only VSR23-9p5-D accepts an AC grid or backup-generator input, so the pump can keep running from mains power when solar generation drops.

What is MPPT and why does it matter for solar pumping?

✅ Maximum Power Point Tracking continuously adjusts the drive’s operating point to extract the most power available from the solar array at any given sunlight level, cloud cover or temperature. VSR’s self-adaptive MPPT algorithm reaches up to 99% tracking efficiency, which directly translates into more water pumped per day.

Does the VSR drive protect the pump if the water source runs dry?

✅ Yes — built-in dry-run protection detects a loss of load/flow and stops the drive automatically, preventing pump damage and reducing maintenance costs.

Can the VSR drive be monitored remotely?

✅ Yes — the built-in RS485 port supports Modbus RTU, so the drive can be integrated with any compatible remote monitoring or SCADA system for irrigation or water-supply networks.
