📋 Understanding the AMX Model Number
Every AMX drive’s part number follows the format AMX48-004-20DNB. Here’s how each position decodes:
| Code Position | Meaning |
|---|---|
| AMX | Product series — AMX = General purpose drive |
| 48 — Input AC Voltage Level | 48 = 230–480V AC / 540V DC |
| 004 — Rated Current | A code for the drive’s rated current in amps — e.g. 004 = 4.2A, 038 = 38A |
| 20 — Protection Class | 20 = IP20 |
| D — Control Panel | D = Graphical panel (LCD keypad, fitted as standard) |
| N/E — EMC Filter | N = No filter · E = With Category C3 EMC filter |
| B — Brake Chopper | B = With brake chopper · – (blank) = Without brake chopper |
💡 For example, AMX48-004-20DEB is a 4.2A-rated, 230–480VAC drive, IP20, with a graphical keypad, a built-in Category C3 EMC filter and a brake chopper fitted — the exact configuration each model is listed under in the Available Models & Ratings table below.
⚖️ Available Models & Ratings
The AMX48 range is dual-rated: Normal Duty (ND, 120% overload for 1 minute every 10 minutes) suits variable-torque loads at a higher continuous kW, while Heavy Duty (HD, 150% overload for 1 minute every 10 minutes) suits harder-starting, constant-torque loads at a lower continuous kW on the same drive. 🔌 Wiring & Control Terminals
The AMX48’s power stage takes 3-phase L1/L2/L3/PE mains into an optional EMC filter, then out to the motor at U/V/W. On models above 45kW without a built-in brake chopper, an external braking resistor connects across DC+/PB/DC−. All control wiring — analog and digital I/O, relay outputs and the RS485 port — lands on two removable terminal blocks (X4 and X5), with separate connectors reserved for optional fieldbus and I/O-expansion boards.
X4 terminal block (analog & digital I/O)
✅ +10VDC, AI1–AI3, GND — 3 analog inputs, 0–10V or 4–20mA
✅ AnOut1, AnOut2 — 2 analog outputs
✅ 0V, DigOut1, DigOut2 — 2 digital outputs (DigOut1 is the high-speed channel)
✅ +24VDC, DigIn1–DigIn7 — 7 digital inputs, 24VDC (DigIn7 is the high-speed channel)
✅ 485+/485− — RS485 port for Modbus communication
X5 terminal block (relay outputs)
✅ Relay 1 — R1A/R1B/R1C and Relay 2 — R2A/R2B/R2C — 2 onboard changeover relay outputs, commonly used for fault indication, contactor control or multi-pump switching logic
Control terminal summary
| Signal Type | Channels |
|---|---|
| Digital Inputs (DI) | 7 channels (DI1–DI7) — DI7 is the high-speed channel |
| Digital Outputs (DO) | 2 channels (DO1, DO2) — DO1 is the high-speed channel |
| Analog Inputs (AI) | 3 channels (AI1–AI3) |
| Analog Outputs (AO) | 2 channels (AO1, AO2) |
| Relay Outputs (RO) | 2 channels (R1, R2) |
⚠️ Always wire and check connections with the drive fully powered down and the DC bus capacitors discharged. Keep control wiring separate from the motor power cable, and fit the optional Category C3 EMC filter and a correctly sized, shielded motor cable if you need to meet EMC compliance for your installation.
💻 Programming & Commissioning the AMX Drive
The AMX ships with a graphical LCD keypad as standard, and can be configured either from the keypad directly or from a PC via CG’s own EmoSoftCom software.
Keypad & PC tools
✅ Graphical LCD keypad (standard) — multi-row, high-resolution display showing motor speed, current, voltage and frequency in real time, plus data trends and waveforms; supports parameter backup/download, customizable display screens, detailed fault descriptions and alarm indicators, and forward/reverse control from the keypad itself
✅ USB Type-C port — on the keypad, for both display/control firmware flashing and application configuration, from a mobile phone or laptop with no special adapter
✅ EmoSoftCom PC software — connects over a standard RS232 cable to the front control panel; records signals with an oscilloscope-style trend view, and saves or loads complete backup parameter sets — useful for service, maintenance or replicating settings across multiple drives
Commissioning workflow
💡 Typical first-run sequence: power up the drive → enter the motor’s nameplate data → choose V/F control for general use or Field-Oriented Control where more precise speed/torque control is needed → configure the brake chopper settings if your load needs controlled deceleration (built in up to 45kW) → set up load monitoring, timers, counters and virtual I/O logic if your application needs in-built sequencing without external hardware → apply one of the specialized application macros if your setup matches brake control or a multi-pump system → if precise speed feedback is required, fit and configure the appropriate encoder or resolver board (see Accessories) → if motor thermal protection via a sensor is required, fit and configure the PTC/PT100/PT1000 board → back up the finished parameter set via the keypad or EmoSoftCom before handover.
Communication setup
✅ Built-in serial communication over RS232 (for EmoSoftCom/PC connection) and RS485 (for a Modbus fieldbus network) via the X4 terminal block
✅ CG lists EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP and Profinet as upcoming communication options for this series — not yet available at the time of this catalog

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between the current AMX48 range and the “Upcoming Range” models?
✅ The eight models from AMX48-004 to AMX48-038 (frames X1–X3, 1.5–18.5kW Normal Duty) are the currently confirmed lineup. The five largest models, AMX48-045 through AMX48-112 (frames X4–X5, 22–55kW Normal Duty), are listed in CG’s own catalog as an “Upcoming Range” — their ratings and dimensions are published, but weight and flow-rate figures aren’t finalized yet.
Does the AMX have a built-in brake chopper?
✅ Yes, up to 45kW it’s built in. Above 45kW, the brake chopper becomes an optional add-on, and an external braking resistor connects via the DC+/PB/DC− terminals.
Does the AMX support fieldbus communication like Profibus or EtherNet/IP?
✅ Today, the AMX ships with RS232 (for PC/EmoSoftCom connection) and RS485 (for Modbus) built in. EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP and Profinet are listed by CG as upcoming communication options, not yet available.
Do I need an encoder board for the AMX?
✅ Only if your application needs closed-loop vector control with precise speed feedback. Open-loop vector control (1:200 speed range) and V/F control run without any encoder at all; a closed-loop vector setup (1:1500 speed range) needs an incremental, sin-cos or resolver encoder board, available from frame X2 upward.
What ambient temperature can the AMX run in without derating?
✅ Up to 50°C with no derating at all — a genuinely useful margin for hot plant rooms, outdoor enclosures or poorly ventilated panels. Beyond that, output current derates by 1% per °C up to a 55°C maximum.
